Bin Cleaning Frequently Asked Questions

Why should I pay someone to professionally clean my trash and recycling bins when I can do it myself for free?

Dirty trash bins stink! Nobody likes to clean them–it's dirty, disgusting work. Using a garden hose and detergent is not powerful enough to clean, sanitize or properly disinfect dirty bins. As an added bonus, it is going spray back on you! If you use harsh chemicals, you could put yourself, your pets and the environment at risk. We use industrial-grade equipment to safely clean, disinfect and deodorize your bins using only water, while collecting and responsibly disposing of the waste.

Absolutely! The same technology we use to clean and disinfect the trash bins at your house can be used to clean and disinfect the trash bins in your church, school, office, retail business and the dirty towel bins in your gym. More info here.

What is electrostatic spray and why should I care about it?

Electrostatic spraying technology delivers touchless disinfection and sanitizing capabilities. Electrostatic spray is, as the name suggests, electrically charged. This means that sanitizers and disinfectants cling to surfaces, fully wrapping and protecting them. No area is left untouched! When we decided to introduce electrostatic spraying into our bin cleaning process, we knew we had to find a solution that was as effective as it was safe. Given this tall order, we chose to use Vital Oxide. Vital Oxide is an EPA-registered hospital disinfectant, cleaner, mold killer, and odor eliminator. It is one of the leading disinfectants used by hospitals and airlines around the world to protect against the spread of COVID-19. In addition, it is non-irritating to the skin and non-corrosive to treated articles, which means it isn’t harmful in any way and doesn’t cause deterioration of the surfaces it comes in contact with! My trash and recycling bins aren’t even a year old. Why would I want/need to have them cleaned?

This is one of the most common objections we hear, especially new neighborhoods. You clean your bathrooms, your kitchen, your clothes, even your car before they get so dirty that you can’t stand them. Your trash and recycling bins are no different. Bacteria start to grow in your trash bins from the very first use. Bacteria emit foul-smelling gaseous molecules that cause awful odors. It does not take very long until a lot of bacteria are growing in that really small space. You have to eliminate bacteria if you want your bins to smell better. Our high-pressure, hot water system does just that. A regular cleaning keeps new trash bins from ever getting to the point that you can’t stand to open the lid.

You specify that you clean trash and recycle bins… Do you clean bins with green waste and /or compost bins?

The short answer is yes, we clean bins with green waste and compost bins. The long answer is that we need bins to be empty before we can clean them. Most compost bins have a lot of organic matter stuck to the sides and bottom that must be scrapped out before we can clean them. If you scrape the organic matter completely out, we can clean the bins just as we clean trash and recycle bins. If you want us to scrape the organic matter out, there will be a surcharge. Please contact us. for details before scheduling your compost bin cleaning.

How often should I have my bins cleaned?

A: This is a personal decision and the answer may depend on where you store the bins. People who store their bins in the garage and have to walk by them every day usually have them cleaned more often. Bins tend to smell nasty when it’s really hot outside. We offer flexibility and clean your bins when you want them cleaned. Monthly and quarterly subscription plans are available as well as our Flex plan and one-time cleaning options. You can get complete details here.

Do you use hazardous chemicals to clean the bins?

No! Our environmentally friendly process safely kills the harmful germs and bacteria living in your bins without hazardous cleaning agents. We will occasionally use a food-safe, biodegradable degreaser to remove stubborn stains or heavy grease that will not come off with water only. Our Degreaser • All Natural Ingredients • Solvent-Free! • No VOCs • No Fragrances, Dyes, Petrochemicals, Phosphates, EDTA, NTA or other hazardous or unnecessary ingredients. Made from all natural ingredients, it is readily biodegradable & safe to use around children, pets & the chemically-sensitive.

Does the cleaning process waste a lot of water?

No. In fact, our process uses significantly less water than if you were to clean the bins yourself. The water used in this process is reclaimed and dumped responsibly to ensure that contaminants from your bins cannot make their way into neighborhood storm drains.

What happens during the cleaning process?

Before cleaning, each trash can is inspected for damage and debris. After inspection, the exterior of the can is cleaned using high pressure, hot water. The lift arm of the truck will then invert the trash can over a custom-built cleaning head containing multiple high-pressure nozzles. The cleaning heads rotate on multiple axes, using only 200°F high-pressure water to remove the dirt and grime from inside the can while simultaneously killing the germs and insects living in it. The contact surfaces of the trash can are then dried and electrostatically sprayed with Vital Oxide. Within seconds, Vital Oxide kills the dangerous viruses, bacteria, mold and mildew that may have survived the standard cleaning and sanitizing process. This includes SARS-CoV-2, the novel Coronavirus that causes COVID-19. Despite its effectiveness, Vital Oxide is an EPA-registered, FDA approved, no-rinse food-safe disinfectant. You can read more about electrostatic spray and Vital Oxide on our blog . After only a couple of minutes, the can is returned to you fresh, clean and safe.

How will I know when my bins are scheduled to be cleaned?

We will clean your bins the day after your normal trash day on the schedule you selected–one time, monthly, quarterly or annually. By doing this, we allow the trash companies to do their job even if they experience delays. We will send you a message the day before your scheduled cleaning, reminding you to have your bins available. You can see some before and after images of dirty bins that have been cleaned here.

When will you start cleaning my bins?

If the need to get your bins cleaned is urgent, please send us an email and we will do our best to accommodate the request. Otherwise, your bins will be cleaned the next time your neighborhood is scheduled. That could be a few days, up to a few weeks, depending on the time during the cycle that you subscribe. If you have any questions, please contact us. We will respond promptly!

How will I know when you’ve actually cleaned my bins?

You’ll know! If you can’t decide, call us. We must have cleaned the wrong bins!

Sometimes I take my trash bins in early and don’t leave them at the curb. Will they still be cleaned?

Unless you have our valet service, please leave your bins at the curb.

My bin wasn't spotless after my cleaning… why?

Some bins are very dirty. We will do our absolute best, but it can take multiple cleanings to fully remove years of residue from bins that haven't been previously cleaned. We will occasionally use a biodegradable degreaser (see above) to remove stubborn stains or heavy grease. Burns, scratches, stains, such as dried paint or other chemical etchings into the plastic will not be removed by our cleaning process.

Can I place my service on hold if I am going to be away?

Absolutely! Please give us at least 24 hours notice. if your bins will not be available for cleaning. If you know you will be out of town for extended periods during the year, our Flex Plan might be the perfect fit for you!
